The unique concept of creating a range of fingerprint jewellery was originated by Smallprint five years ago.
Each Smallprint jeweller has been fully trained in the art of taking prints and making Smallprint silver jewellery, so we have a wealth of experience under our belts and we know our customers have many questions when buying such a precious keepsake.
We'll try to answer those questions for you below but if your specific enquiry is not addressed here don't hesitate to get in touch.
General FAQs
Will I see my child's fingerprint clearly? The clarity of the lines of your child's fingerprint get better with age, however sometimes it is possible to get a really good print from a baby as young as four months. We will show you the print when we take it to make sure you are happy. We take nice deep impressions, so even if the whorls are not very clear, the indentation is still very much a fingerprint. Do you use moulds? No, we take your child's print straight onto the silver clay that when fired becomes your fine silver item of jewellery. This means that you get the best possible print and that your piece of jewellery has been touched by your child. Is the process safe? Yes. The clay is very soft, so we don't have to press hard. Taking fingerprints is not as straight forward as taking handprints though, so we would recommend fingerprints should only be taken by a trained professional, not by a parent or carer, and we prefer not to take prints of children under four months. My child is under four months, can I have a piece of Smallprint jewellery? Yes! Our inkless wipe kits can be used on the day baby is born and prints can easily be taken by parents and baby's hands and feet stay clean! I have two children, can one print go on each cufflink? Yes. It is lovely being able to compare the size of your children's print. We even have a pair of cufflinks which can fit up to four separate children's prints on. Is there a limit to the length of name you can engrave on your jewellery? Usually no. Smallprint jewellers are very skilful and because they take the print in person, they can position it to accommodate most first names. We also engrave your child's age on the back and on our keyrings we can even engrave a short message. There is no extra charge for engraving. Is there an age limit? While handprints on paper can be taken from the day baby is born, we prefer not to take fingerprints of babies under 16 weeks. Just like fingerprints, every baby is unique and because some have such tiny delicate fingers, we will advise that you wait a few more weeks to have their fingerprints taken. However there is no upper age limit and we can even do adults. What better wedding gift than a pair of fine silver cufflinks with a loving print from your wedding ring finger. Are the fingerprints sterling silver? No our fingerprints are fine silver which means they are more pure than sterling. Sterling silver contains a mixture of other metals and alloys which means it is 92.5% pure, while fine silver is 99.9% pure. All the items we attach to the fingerprints such as chains, clasps, key fobs etc are sterling silver. How long does it take? Our turn around time is usually four weeks. Smallprint jewellers take time to make sure your pieces are finished to perfection. However if you have special birthday or anniversary and you've left it a bit late, let us know and we will see if we can turn around your piece in time. I want to give a present to a friend what can I do? You can either order one of our inkless wipe handprint kits and take a handprint of your friends child (these are clean and easy to use and leave no inky mess, so you can be surreptitious!) or you can buy her a gift voucher so she can order herself.
